Introduction

Hello, and welcome to our Blog. The Allentown Rescue Mission has been helping people make significant positive changes in their lives for over 100 years. The Mission's programs have a goal of ending homelessness one person at a time; and in some cases, preventing homelessness. Stick around to learn more about who we are, what we do, and how you can help. Thank you for your time.

  1. What do you think about the new movie "The Soloist?" I found the movie to be moving, but very frustrating at times. Trying to get people to help themselves can be extremely difficult. It reminds me of the phrase, you can give a horse water, but you can't make him drink it." What you do here at the Allentown Rescue Mission takes strength, courage and perserverence. God bless you all:)

After 17 years as Executive Director of the Mission, many people ask me, “Don’t you get tired, frustrated? Aren’t you burned out from dealing with all the problems?”

Not at all. Here’s why. First of all, this is a ministry, and we are doing work that God wants done, and that God is blessing. It may be difficult to believe, but I am energized by God to do this work. And yes: it is difficult and frustrating at times. But I’m not worn out, burned out or “jaded” as some people have asked me. Secondly, there’s a personal reason why I enjoy going to work every day. As a result-oriented person, I need to see many success stories to keep me going. And I do. And it does, keep me going. Finally, another aspect that propels me is the many supporters we have. It is inspiring and sometimes almost amazing to me how many people, families, churches and businesses support the Mission’s work. The Mission is 91% privately funded, and we do not depend on government dollars. Last year our expenses were $2.7 million, and we paid them all, mostly with private donations.
